Our Discovery Flights are designed to sample the kinds of things you would experience as a student pilot. They include a preflight inspection of an aircraft, introduction to checklists, radio communications, maneuvers, and basic principles of flight. The customer does the majority of the flying with the assistance of a qualified, professional flight instructor. Our flight experiences offer a wide range of fun and learning opportunities for all ages. These flights are flown with experienced, professional flight instructors can be custom tailored to your needs. All Discovery Flights include 30 minutes of ground instruction and 60 minutes in the airplane. Please review our Frequently Asked Questions below:

I am buying this as a gift. Can you provide a gift certificate?
Yes. After you have completed your purchase online, send an email to [email protected] with the name of person to be listed on the certificate along with the email address that you would like the PDF of the gift certificate sent to and allow 24 hours for it to be generated.
may i bring a friend or family member along for the experience?
The Discovery Flight is intended to be an introduction to taking flying lessons as compared to a sightseeing ride. Your friend or family member should know that maneuvers will be flown during the experience that may not be as comfortable from the backseat. However, if the combined weights of you and your friend or family member fall within the center of gravity requirements of the airplane then you are welcome to bring them. Once you have been scheduled for your flight, share the weights with the flight instructor assigned to you and they will be the final authority on including your other person.
Is there anything that i should bring with me?
Dress for the weather. It will be hot in the cockpit in the summer months and you should be prepared with winter clothes in the colder months. If it's a sunny day we'd recommend sunscreen, a hat, and water to hydrate. Oncore Aviation will provide a headset for hearing protection.
How will weather impact my discovery flight?
Weather in Western NY can be unpredictable and we want you to have a wonderful first experience. We recommend that you check in with the Flight Instructor who has been assigned to your flight the day prior to verify that weather is looking ok to go. If the flight cannot go due to weather in the short term we will reschedule you promptly at no charge.
when and where do i go on the day of my discovery flight?
We recommend arriving 30 minutes prior to your scheduled flight time. Refer to the address of the location you are flying out of at the bottom of our website. In Buffalo our Flight Instructor will meet you in the lobby of our office. In Rochester, our Flight Instructor will meet you at the Oncore Aviation office on the second floor of AVFlight FBO.
Does this discovery flight count towards by flight time as a student pilot?
Yes. A Discovery Flight is an introductory flight lesson given by a Certified Flight Instructor and that time can be logged in a logbook. If you do not yet have a logbook, then you can purchase one at the time of your flight.
may i buy multiple discovery flight's for myself, a friend or family member?
A Discovery Flight is intended to be an introduction to taking flying lessons. If you know that you, a friend or family members want to continue with lessons then you are better off creating a plan with your flight instructor to make the most effective use of your time and money.
i am a photographer or property owner. May i purchase a discovery flight to go take pictures or fly over something specific?
No. What you are describing is considered a sightseeing flight for hire and Oncore Aviation does not currently support that particular type of flight.
Can i fly over something specific during my discovery flight like my house or a scenic place?
Maybe. Remember that the focus of a Discovery Flight is an introductory flight lesson. If the place or thing you would like to see can be integrated into the flight in the allotted amount of time then your Flight Instructor will make every effort accommodate it.
May i take pictures or video before and during my discovery flight?
Yes. This will be a memorable event! Selfies, pictures with the airplane, and asking your Flight Instructor to take a few pictures during the flight is completely acceptable. However, don't let it become a distraction to making the most of your introduction to flying lessons. Mounting a GoPro or other portable camera to the airplane is not permitted.
